You wake up on a bright sunny morning and decide to go out and place bets on the thoroughbreds. You look at the tote board and see the normal array of horse race betting odds. You had a couple of pints last night so you figure you will just bet on the race favorite to be in the money. But which horse in the field is that? The one with the lowest odds? That may not always be true.
Remember that odds only show you how much money you would receive back based on the bet you placed not how likely the horse is to win the race. Although a horse going off at 3:2 would mean a lot of people are betting on that horse and that they may have some additional betting secrets about the horse. Where else can you look? Get a copy of the Racing Post or sometimes call the Racing Form. This can be found online, in horse racing related newspapers or at the racetrack.
Take a look at the horse’s form over its last few races.See if the horse performed well lately at similar tracks and race lengths as today’s race Also pay attention to who the jockey is. A good jockey can influence the horse’s results a great deal. The track conditions are important too. If the horse is a mudder or better yet a mudlark and it’s raining then that horse may have an advantage over others. Of course if today’s horse race is on a firm track then that factor is less important. See if you can find out where the smart money is going. Smart money is where the insiders are placing their bets. Insiders sometimes know additional information from the warm up or from the trainer etc. You can also see if you can find out any ‘hot tip’ for the race. These tips from exercise riders, owners, groomers and the such sometime work out but most time don’t.
Finding the favorite when betting on horse races is very difficult. Not only do you have to factor in valid data but also need to be aware enough to factor out invalid data. Even so the race favorites only win 30-40% of the time. So it is a very difficult process that only the best are good at.
